SurePure announces benefits of photopurification technology in South African dairy market

FBR Staff Writer Published 25 July 2014

SurePure, South Africa-based firm involved in turbid liquid photopurification, has announced the benefits of using its patented photopurification technology in the South African dairy market.

Local firm Oaksprings Dairy, which has been utilizing SurePure's technology, said it experienced additional benefits associated with the technology.

Oaksprings spokesman Leigh Reyneke said, "Given the rising cost of energy and the sometimes intermittent supply in rural areas ofSouth Africa we were looking to reduce our electricity bill by reducing our reliance on our pasteuriser. We have experienced savings in the order of 75% in our energy costs with this technology.

"So the SurePure promise of being able to eliminate thermal processing of the cheese is very attractive to us. SurePure's academic research suggested we should also enjoy approximately a 10% yield increase due to the reduction of psychotrophic bacteria in the milk, which is the increase that we in fact experienced."

"We have also been pleasantly surprised about the flavor and quality improvements in our cheddar. Overall, the use of SurePure's technology has been an unqualified success," Reyneke added.

SurePure CEO Guy Kebble said, "Having completed a comprehensive three year academic investigation into the benefits of photopurifying milk for cheese production, it is gratifying to see this academic data being reflected in the real world of cheese-making.

"We think the trifecta of energy-savings, yield increase and quality enhancements will prove irresistible to the dairy industry over time."
